Job Description

The Storage, Backup and Disaster Recovery (DR) Administrator is a member of the Information Technology Group responsible for supporting existing storage, backup and DR systems and technologies, and implementing strategic solutions to stated business challenges.

You will be responsible for managing all aspects of storage, backup and archiving, and disaster recovery in a hosted cloud environment. The environment includes physical Windows Clusters and virtual servers hosted on VMware and Hyper-v clusters. Guest VMs support a variety of enterprise level applications (SQL, Exchange, Dynamics, etc. ). Storage medium includes both direct and network attached storage (EqualLogic SAN, Nimble SAN, DAS/NAS, tape). This position will consult and collaborate with outside vendors as well as internal Operations and Support personnel on backup related performance, capacity planning, disaster recovery, archival within the storage infrastructure

Responsibilities:

  • Implements hardware/software solutions that enhance or extend the enterprise SAN, Storage, and Backup Infrastructures.
  • Develop and produce capacity and performance management reports and associated recommendations.
  • Implement the release schedule ensuring that all hardware and software in the SAN, Storage, and Backup infrastructures are on current versions and patch levels.
  • Review and update standard configurations and procedures based on best practices.
  • Evaluate implementation of network/systems management software for potential areas of improvement.
  • Implement high-availability solutions to maximize application uptime and reduce unplanned outages.
  • As specifications are developed and agreed upon, provide deployment support for new system implementations.
  • Capacity Management, Coordination and Implementation of new Systems, Upgrades, and Scheduled Maintenance of Storage Technologies.
  • Maintain and Test Disaster Recovery for all critical business applications/systems using a variety of techniques.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals for purchases of hardware, software, and technical services to assure adherence to technical specifications.
  • Maintain storage and backup infrastructure inventories and maintenance and support contracts
  • Provide and Update Storage Documentation to include Architecture, Configuration, and Run Books.
  • Provide 24×7 operational and technical support for the entire storage environment.
  • Implement hardware/software solutions that enhance or extend the enterprise SAN Storage
  • Develop and produce capacity and performance management reports and associated recommendations.
  • Implement the release schedule ensuring that all hardware and software in the SAN, Storage, and Backup infrastructures are on current versions and patch levels.
  • Review and update standard configurations and procedures based on best practices.
  • Evaluate implementation of network/systems management software for potential areas of improvement.
  • As specifications are developed and agreed upon, provide deployment support for new system implementations.
  • Provisioning, management, maintenance, and de-provisioing of storage volumes/LUNs to support server deployment activities
  • Daily queue management of backup, including accurate logging, documentation, tracking and resolution of issues
  • Administer, install, support and monitor on-line and backup archive storage systems (Veeam, CommVault, NovaStor, SAN Snapshots)
  • Setting up and maintaining client backups according to policies and standards
  • Restoring data from backups as required
  • Maintain performance levels in all areas of the on-line and backup archive storage environments by troubleshooting workflow bottlenecks, configuration issues and hardware limitations.
  • Research, test and recommend new on-line and backup archive vendor hardware/software technologies to enable internal operational efficiency.
  • Perform capacity planning analysis and produce recommendations regarding on-line and backup archive storage systems and solutions.
  • Research and resolve problems related to all parts of the on-line and backup archive storage infrastructure.
  • Maintain professional connections with backup archive storage equipment vendors.
  • Utilize, adhere to and help define current best practice standards of backup archive storage administration.
  • Assist in the development, deployment, and maintenance of IT Disaster Recovery Planning

Required Skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work well with a highly-skilled, dedicated technical team
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to follow processes
  • 2-3 years of well-rounded IT experience
  • Working knowledge of VMware, Hyper-V, networking, NAS, SAN, backup.
  • Excellent time management skills

While not a requirement, preference will be given to candidates that live in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Since we have many customers in countries that do not speak English, a second language would be beneficial but not essential.
