Poor Password Security Led to Recent Water Treatment Facility Hack

On February 5, a breach occurred at a water treatment facility in Florida, where attackers briefly increased the amount of sodium hydroxide in drinking water using a system that allows for remote access. Though the intrusion was quickly detected and reversed, new details have emerged showing there was a lack of adequate security measures in place to protect the facility’s critical infrastructure.

In 2020, the prevalence of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks grew by more than 50%, along with a significant increase in complexity and volume of DDoS traffic. This comes at a time that many people are working and learning from home, making it one of today’s largest security concerns.
In a recent report, Microsoft Corp President Brad Smith cited the SolarWinds breach as the “largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen”. Cybersecurity experts anticipate it could take months to fully identify compromised systems and that the attack may have affected up to 18,000 SolarWinds customers.
